Unity Advanced Settings Tool

Adding New Values To Database. 1
Obtaining Updates. 2
Revision History. 2
This is a simple tool that allows users to safely edit many
of the “hidden registry settings” that commonly need to be modified
in the field. These are items that,
for whatever reason, are not on the SA interface and require users to add/edit
keys to the registry.
This tool prevents potential messy accidents by forcing
specific value ranges, making sure edits aren’t applied to Unity versions
that can’t handle them.
There’s only a couple settings in here that are
“String” values that need to be edited “free
form”. The rest are all
limited to a drop down list of value or are “key only” values where
the mere presence of the key in the registry is sufficient.
Runs with Unity version 2.4.6 or later. Keys will be visible only for those
values that are legal to adjust on the locally running system
You can add you own keys (see below) however they will be
overwritten if you update the tool to a later version.
Adding new keys to the database is easy but should only be
done by folks in development or TAC since new versions of the registry edit
tool will install their own MDB files which will write over any changes you
might make in the field. However if
you still feel the need to add key to the database, here’s what you need
to do.
Start the Registry Edit tool using the command line
parameter “/AddKey”.
When you do this an additional menu item named “Add New Key”
will appear in the menu bar at the top.
Select this option and a form will appear that lets you add, delete and
edit the registry key settings in the current database stored in
“Settings.MDB” in the install directory.
Be careful! The
tool will let you edit or delete existing key settings which you probably
don’t want to do.
For each registry value you want to add to the database,
fill in the values on the form.
Here’s a quick run down on what each field means:
- Index.
This is an automatically generated
unique number for each record in the database. This is a read only field, you
can’t mess with it. Be
aware that when keys are edited/delted this number may skip values…
don’t worry about it.
- Key
Path. This is the registry key path. For instance “SOFTWARE\Active
Voice\Doh\1.00\”. This
does NOT include the registry key name itself, this is just the path to
the directory where the key is stored. Yes, that last “\” is
required on there. NOTE: All values are assumed to be under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. If you
need to set values outside of that registry branch, this tool is not for
you.
- Key
Name. This is the name of the registry key itself that’s found
at the key path above. In the
rare case of a registry setting that is ONLY the key path and not a key
value, you can leave this blank.
There are only 1 or 2 of these types of values left so this should
not be the case.
- Key
Type. You must select a
value from the drop down list… the list includes:
- “REG_SZ” – string
values
- “REG_DWORD”
– number values
- “REG_BINARY”
– binary values, not used by any of these registry settings…
this should never be used.
- “NONE”
– for cases where the presence of the key path is all that is
needed and not a key with a value.
As mentioned above this should be used rarely if at all any
longer.
- Min
Value- If the key type is a number you can set it’s minimum
allowable value here. String
values don’t use this field.
- Max
Value- If the key type is a number you can set it’s maximum
allowable value here. String
values don’t use this field.
- Step
By – If the key type is a number you can set how far to step for
each value added to the drop down list the user can select from. For instance if your minimum value
is “0” and the maximum value is “100” and you have
a step by value of “20” the drop down list of choices will be
populated with “0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100”. The user is not allowed to
“free form” input into this field so they much choose one of
these values. As such
don’t go overboard with overly broad step-by values. On the other hand don’t
dictate 10,000 items in the drop down list either… you’ll
break it.
- Min
Unity Version – If you’re using the form to add new key
values as you should this is a drop down list of all major Unity versions
between 2.3 and 3.0. Some
registry keys are only valid for specific versions of Unity so you can set
which ones are appropriate here.
If the local version of Unity the tool is being run on is outside
the minimum and maximum Unity version numbers allowed the item will now
show up for selection in the list.
- Max
Unity Version – See above.
- Short
Description – Short description (less than 250 characters) of
the registry key change being added.
This is the string that shows up in the list box on the left of the
application form.
- Long
Description – Longer description of the behavior change that the
registry key edit will evoke.
This value shows up in the edit box on the right of the application
form. Be sure to include
examples of conversation modifications if appropriate and the like. There is no limit on the size of
this field so go wild.
